Steer Town Health Centre Gets J$3M Refresh

KINGSTON, Jamaica. Tuesday, May 6, 2025: The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in partnership with its agency the National Health Fund (NHF) and the North-East Regional Health Authority (NERHA), has made upgrades to the Steer Town Health Centre in St. Ann under the Ministry’s Operation Refresh programme.

 

The Steer Town Health Centre serves a population of some currently serves a population of approximately 12,000 residents, with a dedicated team of 12 staff members. Funded by the NHF, the J$3 million investment included the installation of two air conditioning units, upgraded electrical meter panels with associated wiring and breakers, painting of building and grills, and the installation of signage and fencing.

 

The official handover ceremony of the newly upgraded facility was held last Friday, (May 2), where the primary care facility will continue to offer services including Pap Smear, Postnatal care, Child healthcare, Psychological Services, Antenatal Clinic, Curative Services and Family Planning.

 

“My commendations to the National Health Fund, the Northeast Regional Health Authority, and the team at the Ministry of Health & Wellness for their work and dedication to making this project a success. Your efforts have revitalised this facility, ensuring that the people of Steer Town and the wider parish of St. Ann receive the standard of care that they deserve.”

“This is the second health centre within the parish to benefit under Operation Refresh with more to come,” said Dr. Tufton, during his keynote address at the handover ceremony.

 

Operation Refresh, announced by the Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, MP during his Sectoral presentation in 2024, is designed to give renewed attention to primary care reform.

 

One billion Jamaican dollars has been earmarked for the programme, which is to spruce up select health centres while also enabling more home visits from community health aides.
