Parents Overnight Suite, Cardiac Ward and More Bed Space coming to Bustamante Hospital

May 5, 2025

Kingston, Jamaica. Saturday, May 3, 2025: Patients, Parents and Staff at the Bustamante Hospital for Children will soon start benefiting from a five-story building currently under construction on the hospital compound. The facility, which is scheduled to open by the end of the second quarter of the financial year, will house the overnight suite for parents, clinical services and the cardiac ward.

The parents’ overnight suite will significantly improve our current capacity of parents’ rooms and allow parents to rest and reduce travel time and cost (especially for families from out of town), while providing the opportunity for improved engagement of parents in the management of their child’s condition.

The upper floors of the new building will offer clinical services and will increase the bed capacity by 100 beds.

Speaking during a tour of the facility on Thursday, (May 1), Minister of Health & Wellness, Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, MP noted that “the Parent Overnight Suite reflects the ongoing commitment of the Bustamante Hospital for Children to support the parents of children admitted under our care. While the existing facility is modest and limited in capacity, we look forward to the opening of the suite and the expanded beds and services that will be offered when the new building is completed.”

Meanwhile, the Cardiac Ward will support the only dedicated paediatric cardiac service in Jamaica. This will facilitate the admission of cardiac patients to a dedicated cardiac ward and will benefit the further development of the cardiac service by accommodating the patients pre- and postoperatively for cardiac catheterization and cardiac surgery.

The new building on the hospital compound is a joint project under the management of the National Health Fund (NHF), an agency of the Ministry of Health & Wellness and the National Housing Trust (NHT), an agency within the Office of the Prime Minister.
