New sugar limit for beverages in schools effective January 1
Jan. 6, 2020
The Ministry of Health & Wellness says a new sugar limit for beverages in schools took effect on January 1, 2020.
Health & Wellness Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton urged drink manufacturers and schools to adhere to the new limit. "When we had announced the restrictions on sugary drink in schools, we had said it would be a graduated programme that over time would be reduced to the levels...that are recommended by WHO, which is 2.5 grams per hundred (milligrams) serving. We're at five now and (it is) effective this January here...," he said.
Dr. Tufton said most drink manufacturers and schools have complied with the sugar policy which took effect last year.
